The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony in 2021 was celebrated for being the most inclusive to date. Among the many history-making wins were Chloé Zhao as the first woman of color to win the award for best director; Minari ’s Youn Yuh-jung as the first Korean actor to win an Academy Award; and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom makeup and hair team Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson as the first Black women winners of their category. “Jamika and I break this glass ceiling with so much excitement,” said Neal in her acceptance speech. “I know that one day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking—it will just be normal.” It felt like real progress.
